Wikiducation Belgium/Approach

The Wikiducation.BE approach is multi-tiered, multi-layered and multi-focussed :

First axis : FOCUS

[edit]

The Wikiducation.BE project approaches 3 different types of public: The images show a schematic overview of the school systems (compared to US/UK [1] )

Education in Flanders/Belgium
Education in Flanders/Belgium
Education in the United States
Education in the United States
  • Focus 1 Schools and teachers :
For our launch we look at students over the age of 15
      • ie. secondary pupils of the 3rd grade classes 5 and 6, and the supplemental 7th class
      • Hogescholen (bachelors): Non-University higher education (see illustration)
      • Universities (masters and bachelors)
Later we can expand our focus to secondary school pupils from age of 12
In order to make this happen we need to train and professionalise our volunteers, through the VPDI (Ambassador) program ( see focus 3)
  • Focus 2 New potential volunteers
A number of associations, ranging form cultural, historical, preservation, or professional to gender- , senior citizens and youth associations are potentially interested to get their members acquainted with Wikipedia. Some those might even be interested in collaborating en becoming contributors.
Permanent education institutions (adult education)
To train current wiki users te become more advanced users :
    • off wiki volunteer training (ambassadors, edit-a-thon or Wikicafé volunteers)
      • presentation skills (talking to a group crowd ...)
      • teaching / workshop facilitation skills training
    • user training to sync out contributors with community issues
    • admin training
    • specialised or development training
    • chapter administration basics training

Second axis : LAYERING

[edit]

In each of the focus areas there will be a form of layering in the course program.
Layering should be understood as a progression, form basic to intermediate to advanced courses. This often means that in order to get into intermediate course you need to have completed a certain set of basic courses. As you advance in the courses you basically get more points on your "volunteer license". The more points you got, the more things you can do as a volunteer.

Third axis : TIERING

[edit]

Tiering is about impact progression. Especially in the education sector tiering is necessary. A primary selection of 15+ secondary schools resulted in a list of 300 contact addresses. Given the start-up phase of this project and the resources available we cannot respond to 300 requests , there aren't that many days in a school year. So we will program a pilot of 4 (maximum 6) schools for a pilot program, and slowly build from that.

Phase 1 pilot

[edit]
  • Maximum 6 schools ,
  • each school maximum 1 or 2 lecturers, each with maximum 2 (for lecturers with previous auto-developed experience max 4) learning modules (subjects or syllabi) and maximum of 40 students
  • each school in the pilot gets also
    • general Welcome to Wikipedia presentation(s) for all students
    • general introduction to Wikiducation.BE presentation(s) for all lecturers and teaching assistance/support staff
    • students outside the pilot can join in a on wiki Welcome to Wikipedia class
    • regular Wikicafeś

The expected outcome of this pilot is

  • Lecturer WIKI-ED-Ambassador for the school
  • Student WIKI-ED-Ambassadors for the school
  • Phase 2 pilot-project for the school (Lecturers outside the program can get help to develop their program for phase 2 pilot)

Phase 2 pilot

[edit]

Pre project requirements :

  • Phase 1 pilot completed in school required (or in another location of the same school)
  • at least 1 Lecturer WIKI-ED-Ambassador for the school
  • at least 2 Student WIKI-ED-Ambassadors for the school

Project

  • each school maximum 4-6 lecturers, each with maximum 2 (for lecturers with previous experience max 4-6) learning modules (subjects or syllabi) and maximum of 120 students
  • each school in the pilot gets also
    • general a Welcome to Wikipedia presentation(s) for all students
    • advanced introduction to Wikiducation.BE and Wikipedia education platform presentation(s) for all lecturers and teaching assistance/support staff
    • students outside the pilot can join in a on wiki Welcome to Wikipedia class
    • regular Wikicafeś

The expected outcome of this pilot is

  • Wikipedia good-use policy for students and lecturers
  • a team of Lecturer WIKI-ED-Ambassador for the school
  • a team of Student WIKI-ED-Ambassadors for the school
  • Phase 3 -project for the school
  • Lecturers outside the program can get help to develop their program for their phase 2 pilot

Phase 3

[edit]

Pre project requirements :

  • Phase 2 pilot completed in school required (or in another location of the same school)
  • at least 5 Lecturer WIKI-ED-Ambassador for the school
  • at least 10-15 Student WIKI-ED-Ambassadors for the school

Project

  • each school now autonomously develops Wikipedia based classes and projects with their lecturer and student ambassador teams
  • school has a Wikipedia good-use policy for students and lecturers
  • Wikimedia can provide a Welcome to Wikipedia presentation(s) for all students or provide support for
    • students outside the pilot can join in a on wiki Welcome to Wikipedia class
    • regular Wikicafeś

however this could be organised with the assistance of Wikimedia by the schools Ambassador team (senior students mentorship program)

The expected outcome of this phase is

  • a team of Lecturer WIKI-ED-Ambassador for the school
  • a team of Student WIKI-ED-Ambassadors for the school
  • local Wikipedia user group linked to the chapter: the school (ambassadors) can reach out to the local community and local associations to provide Welcome to Wikipedia presentations
