Creative Commons Belgium (CC BE) is the local chapter of the international Creative Commons. Creative Commons is devoted to expand the range of creative works available for others and released a series of Creative Commons licenses to enable this. Wikipedia is published under one of these licenses.

We have a passion for CC licenses, and we promote them fiercely. Our members give talks, translate licenses or content, organize events, and offer a contact point between the Belgian users and the global community.

Creative Commons Belgium is a working group of Open Knowledge Belgium.

About Creative Commons

[edit]

Creative Commons (CC) is a movement dedicated to make easier to share knowledge and enrich the commons. The commons is understood as the resources accessible to all members of our global society. The movement started with the inception of the CC licenses, which are legal tools for creative works that consider the intention of a creator about the purpose of the work beyond what the traditional “copyright monetization framework” allows. Currently the scope also includes a network of affiliates that support and promote CC activities around the world in the following areas:

  • Arts & Culture: advocating for the use of CC licenses by technological platforms, search engines, and cultural institutions.
  • Open Access: fostering a political climate that favors the publication of scientific literature with CC licenses.
  • Education: programs to learn about the meaning and impact of open licenses and resources. Recruiting expertise to foster the common good.
  • Open Data: promoting data release into the public domain (CC0).
  • Legal: licenses, research of new legal tools, database of related legal decisions.
  • Open Science: crafting definitions and consensus, advise on public funding.
  • Policy: enabling governments to appropriate CC licenses, promotion of fundamental copyright reform to guarantee a more equal, just, and fair society.
  • Technology: standards, languages, and code to promote the use of CC licenses.
