Wiki Loves Monuments is an international photographic competition to promote historic sites around the World through Wikimedia projects (mainly Wikipedia, Wikimedia Commons, and Wikidata). Everybody can participate.

This year Belgium participates again. You are encouraged to submit any photos of monuments in Belgium between 1 and 30 September. By submitting your photos to the competition, you share your heritage with the rest of the world. We explain below how to participate, what you can win and what monument sites are eligible.

Why participate?

[edit]

Participate in Wiki Loves Monuments, the largest photography competition in the world, and help Wikipedia document monuments and heritage buildings.

Participating is fun! By photographing and sharing images of heritage, you can explore more about Belgium heritage and learn about it. It's a nice challenge to improve your photography skills, and you can win nice prizes. The national jury will select 10 images that will represent Belgium in the international finale. These images will compete for the international awards. More information about the international competition is available on the international website.

You can also upload images that you may have already taken during one of your foreign travels to the national competition of that country.

Competition rules

[edit]

We keep the competition clean and simple to participate. There are only a few rules to participate in the contest in Belgium. Let's quickly go through them. Every submission should be:

  • Personally taken and uploaded;
  • Uploaded during September 2023;
  • During the upload process, you give permission to re-use the image under a CC BY-SA license;
  • It contains a listed monument, which you have identified using the monument identifier;
  • You might as well enter its Wikidata item number.

Next to that, there are a few practical rules:

  • You should have registered an e-mail address to your Wikimedia account;
  • If the photo gets deleted for any reason, it is disqualified from the competition;
  • You are responsible to obey the law while taking and uploading the photo.

National Prizes

[edit]

In October, the national jury will evaluate the photographs and select the best 10 pictures of the monuments in Belgium to submit to the international finale. The international jury will then announce the international winners in December.

A national prize in cash is foreseen:

  • First prize: 500 €
  • Second till 5th prize: from 400 till 100 €
  • From 6-10th prize 50 €

Note: Those prizes are shared amongst related Wiki Loves Heritage competitions that Wikimedia Belgium organises this summer.

Judging criteria

[edit]

The jury will determine the winners of the international contest taking into the consideration the following criteria (in no particular order):

  • Technical quality (sharpness, use of light, perspective etc.);
  • Originality;
  • Usefulness of the image for Wikipedia.

Images that reach a top ranking of the international finale, will typically at least fulfill the Featured picture candidates rules at Wikimedia Commons. But feel free to submit many images, and let the jury consider if they are good enough.
