Sign a PDF with eID

A PDF document can be easily signed with a Belgian eID reader. When you have a Word or a Google Doc document to sign, simply export to PDF format. The PDF viewer will be automatically started with the PDF document to sign.

Prerequisites[edit]

  • PDF document (Google Suite allows saving any document as PDF)
  • eID reader
  • eID card
  • eID pin code

Functionality[edit]

  • You can request signatures from other parties
  • You can sign amongst more than one party
  • The last signer should lock the document

Advantages[edit]

  • Fully electronic procedure: less paper work (no printing, no physical signing, no scanning)
  • Less risk for fraud
  • Builtin non-repudiation
  • (nearly) Automatic archiving (Google Suite)

Procedure[edit]

  • Open/save the PDF document
  • Click on Tools → Certificates
  • Choose Digital signature
  • Mark a region on the document
  • Choose your identity (eID)
  • Set the document as read-only before signing
  • You have the option to change the signature text
  • Choose the location of your signed document
  • Sign (enter your pin-code)

Follow-up[edit]

  • Send the signed document as attachment
  • Archive the document as legal proof
