Jitsi

Sommigen geven de voorkeur aan Jitsi als open source project voor online communicatie, en “neutrale omgeving”. Velen van de Wikimedia-gemeenschap zijn voorstander van open source (velen gebruiken dagelijks Linux of zijn zelf open source-ontwikkelaar).

Functionality

• It is using WebRTC
• Reduced bandwidth usage

Advantages

• You could install and run Jitsi as a personal server (but you require an FQDN and advanced Linux skills to do so). Server bandwidth and CPU can quickly become a bottelneck.
• You could use Wikimedia Meet as a shared platform

Disadvantages

• Platform is less stable than commercial offerings
• Participants are not screened before connecting (moderator can only kick them out afterwards)
• It seems not possible to perform video recording, or streaming?
• Sound and video are activated immediately (in the app they can be proactively disabled via settings)
• Seems to use more resources on the client browser, both bandwidth and CPU, especially for more participants (can make the tool useless especially for slow/old laptops)
• The color of the mute and camera button is different from Google Meet (this is pretty confusing)

Common advantages with Google Meet

• De coördinator hoeft geen paswoorden te verdelen – de sessie-link kan dus op voorhand verdeeld worden.
• De coördinator hoeft dus ook geen email-adressen te kennen, noch een mail te versturen naar de deelnemers
• De deelnemers hoeven zich niet op voorhand in te schrijven
• Een vaste link zou dus kunnen worden gebruikt
• Deelnemers hoeven geen account te hebben; je kan evengoed identificeren via een pseudoniem
• De coördinator behoudt volledige controle: zij/hij accepteert deelnemers
• Deelnemers kunnen dus niet op eigen initiatief de sessie starten; zij moeten individueel wachten op toelating van de coördinator
• De coördinator kan eveneens deelnemers “buiten wippen” indien nodig (bij wangedrag)
• De gebruikersinterface is gelijkaardig

Advantages of Google Meet

Toch denk ik dat Google Meet een aantal voordelen heeft t.o.v. Jitsi:

• Google Suite is GDPR gecertifieerd (hoe zit dat met Jitsi?)

Known problems

• Jitsi can't start without a microphone (Google Meet can)
