Vacancy for communications and project officer
Wikimedia Belgium (WMBE) seeks a Communications and project officer m/f/x for an assignment of 2 days a week, to be filled in a flexible manner. Currently, the organisation does not have any employees. All tasks related to projects, communication, public relations, and prospecting partners are currently performed by volunteers, by representatives from the board or from the user community. To ensure the continuity and further development of future activities, Wikimedia Belgium is looking for a part-time freelancer. This will allow the board to focus on strategy and management tasks rather than operational tasks.
If you have a fluent pen and are familiar with communication management and/or project management, Wikimedia Belgium can offer you a contract as freelance collaborator. In this position, you are fluent in several languages (NL/FR/EN) and you have social skills, orally, in writing and virtually. You are familiar with editing newsletters and website articles and feel at home on social media and Wikipedia. You have organisational talent and you feel comfortable setting up and supervising edit-a-thons, activities and events. An interest in open knowledge is a plus.
You will work independently and from home, in consultation with the members of the Wikimedia Belgium Board of Directors in a freelance contract. Your salary is market-based.
Tasks
Potentially, we foresee the following tasks:
- Communications: maintain websites, write and publish newsletters, follow up and respond to social media, maintain documentation (WMBE website, Google Suite), answer emails, answer phone calls;
- Translation: run websites, mailings. Belgium has 3 official languages, and Wikimedia Belgium uses English as its general (and international) language. German is not widely used in the community.
- Project management: (helping to) organise edit-a-thons, small conferences and keeping the public activity calendar up to date;
- (GLAM and education) Partner management: prospecting, informing partners, planning and co-organising projects.
Skills
- (ideally) Fluent oral and written communication in NL/FR/EN
- Know how to work with office tools
- Being able to organise administration and archives
- Ability to work independently and take initiative
- Willingness to become familiar with the Wikimedia movement and its projects, the most important of which is Wikipedia
- Being social, polite and cooperative, but strict about agreements and procedures
Working conditions
WMBE does not have an office, so freelancers can work from home. You will have many interactions with third parties (museums, archives, libraries, universities, colleges). A member of the Wikimedia Belgium Board of Directors will be your contact person within the organisation and with the community. Your tasks will be assigned by a board member, in consultation with the other board members. You will report to the Board of Trustees of Wikimedia Belgium. The appointment will take place through a freelance contract.
