Scribus is a free Linux pre-press tool to create publisher compatible PDF documents.

It is a useful alternative for InDesign and Acrobat Distiller.

The Belgium association of printers has agreed to use the medibel+ standard: ISOcoated_v2_300_eci.icc certified PDF 1.3 CMYK.

Create a PDF[edit]

Use the export option.

Conventions[edit]

  • PDF 1.3
  • ISOcoated v2 300 format required (PDF/X-1:2001)
  • Filename ends as _IC.pdf
  • Most publishers require
    • specific dimensions
    • minimum font point size

Images[edit]

Minimum 300 dpi required.

  • convert SVG to TIFF

Setup[edit]

Required configuration files:

  • /usr/local/share/color/icc/ISOcoated_v2_300_eci.icc (downloaded)

Known problems[edit]

  • The File:Wikipedia-logo-v2-wordmark.svg crashes the application
    • You can convert it to TIFF with GIMP
  • Few (free) fonts available
  • Archaic interface (poort WYSIWYG)
    • Difficult to see whether the right font was selected
