Photo contests this summer

Wiki Loves Heritage Belgium

Wiki Loves Heritage Belgium 2024 is a photo competition about heritage in Belgium, organised by Wikimedia Belgium (WMBE), running from 1 July to 30 September 2024. The campaign has been organised annually since 2018. During the contest, you can upload your photos of heritage in Belgium.

Wanting to participate? Then read the following tips!

  1. Go out and take pictures of heritage. Heritage includes immovable and movable heritage, intangible heritage, maritime heritage and photos of permanent museum exhibitions. Important here is that there is Freedom of Panorama in Belgium.
  2. Log in or create a new Wikimedia account. Register under your own name or a pseudonym. Provide a valid email address.
  3. Upload and describe your photos. Preferably use your uploaded photos to illustrate a Wikipedia article. You don't necessarily have to write it yourself! You can simply copy/paste the generated link at the end of the upload script to an existing article, in any language. Add a good description and one or more valid categories, so that people can easily find your image.

After the competition, a jury will judge the photos and select the winning ones. At the award ceremony, the winners will receive a cash prize (first prize is €500) and a photo frame of their winning photo. Need inspiration? Check out the 2023 edition.

Wiki Loves Denderland

If you live in the Dender region, you can also picture your own region via Wiki Loves Denderland. The Erfgoedcel Denderland is organising a regional photo contest as part of Wiki loves Heritage to enrich Wikipedia with images of heritage from the Denderstreek.

Eligible are photos of traditions, processions, popular sports, crafts, regional dishes ... and culture. To upload, follow the tips above. The 10 best photos will be exhibited in the autumn and receive a prize. The competition will run until 30 September 2024.

Jurors wanted

The Wiki Loves Monuments international photo competition will be held again in the month of September. We are again looking for a jury to judge these 3 photo contests in October. Judges will receive a small flat-rate expense allowance. Submit applications via jury@wikimedia.be.

Wikipedia Pages Wanting Photos

Wikipedia Pages Wanting Photos is in its fifth edition and encourages Wikipedians worldwide to add photos to Wikipedia articles that do not yet have any. This can be done for any language during the period 1 July-31 August 2024. Doing so, the abundant visual material available on Wikimedia Commons can be put to good use. Moreover, it makes Wikipedia articles more attractive and instructive. So get to work!

Wikimedia Belgium General Assembly

As required by law, Wikimedia Belgium held its General Assembly on 8 June 2024, at Amazone in Brussels. The meeting approved the Annual Accounts, went over the activities undertaken in 2023 and reviewed the governance.

Sound finances

Wikimedia Belgium has a healthy financial situation. The non-profit organisation receives an annual grant from the WMF and raises funds through the Friends of Wikimedia Belgium Fund. This fund is managed through the King Baudouin Foundation and makes donations from €40 tax-deductible. An application for the new Peer-to-Peer platform for the Friends of Wikimedia Belgium Fund will be submitted in 2024. The Fund will allow Wikimedia Belgium to finance projects up to a maximum amount of €7,500.

Numerous activities and partnerships

In 2023, Wikimedia Belgium collaborated with the Institute of Aeronomy (BIRA) and the Public Domain Day. Projects under the Friends of Wikimedia Belgium Fund were realised in collaboration with the Koers museum and Amazone. Furthermore, projects were realised with the Industriemuseum, Vrouwen van papier, Fotomuseum Antwerpen, meemoo (Visual name authority), Jenevermuseum and the Erfgoedcel Roeselare. We also looked forward to the new working year and noted that Wikimedia Belgium will celebrate its 10th anniversary in 2024.

New Board

At the Wikimedia General Assembly, the board was refreshed with academic and female input. Geert Van Pamel remains chairman. Meet the renewed Wikimedia Belgium board team. Want to know more about the state of affairs of Wikimedia Belgium? Read the full report of the General Assembly.
