Translate Wikipedia articles

From Wikimedia Belgium

Wikipedia pages may be translated, because they all have a CC BY-SA license. But you require to mention the sourcing message.

Luckily there exist a nice built-in translation tool.

How to start

[edit]
  1. Search your article in the source language
    • Verify if it is noteable
  2. Click on Languages -> Add languages -> Translate this page
  3. (choose your target language)
  4. Translate all sections
  5. Save your new pages
  6. Make corrections (visual editor, wiki code editor)

Advantages

[edit]
  • Templates, links, and references are automatically translated.

Disadvantages

[edit]
  • Poor translation quality
  • You still need to do copywriting
  • Can fail, unable to save the results

Tips and tricks

[edit]
  • Translate by section (not the complete page)

Manual corrections

[edit]
  • Recreate the references automatically:
    • Copy the URL
    • Copy the ISBN
  • Using the (source) visual editor
    • You might try to copy the references as such
      • Possible manual correction afterwards
