ChromeOS
Appearance
ChromeOS is a operating system that is typically used with Chromebooks.
In the long run the ChromeOS operating system will be merged with Android.
Advantages
[edit]- Cheap and simple hardware
- You don't need to install the basic apps (browser, Google Suite, Google Drive)
- Most Windows documents can be used transparently
- Google Play Android apps are available as an option
Optional software
[edit]- An optional Linux container to run e.g. OpenRefine, Pywikibot, or other Linux tools
- You can easily share files with Windows via OneDrive, and Windows Subsystem for Linux.
Known problems
[edit]Security
[edit]- After setup, you should enforce requisting a password upon reopening the lid.
- When a video screen is connected via USB-C, the system does not lock and suspend when the lid is closed. Unplug the USB-C cable to let the system go to suspend mode.
Linux
[edit]Linux is a container option. When an update is pending, files can't be transferred.
- Reboot to force the update
Powerwash
[edit]You can easily reset a Chromebook to factory defaults. All user accounts are removed, and the complete operating system is reinstalled.
Caveat: data saved outside Google Drive are lost (e.g. Linux container).
