Wikimedia Belgium approved as chapter by the Board of Trustees[edit]

Hello all,

Today I can officially announce the happy news that Wikimedia Belgium is recognized by the Wikimedia Foundation as chapter (and formally need to found WMBE and sign documents/agreements). After the approval of the Affiliations Committee on 23 June 2014, the Board of Trustees of the Wikimedia Foundation has approved with a meeting on 6 August 2014 at Wikimania in London the resolution for the recognition of Wikimedia Belgium. This resolution has been published on 29 August.

Now we can take our next steps in the foundation of Wikimedia Belgium.

Rounding up Wikimedia Belgium constitution[edit]

We are now in the process of finalizing the founding of the Wikimedia Belgium vzw.

I think we should clean up this portal page, move all the projectstuff to the archives, and make a decent introduction of the new asociation. The dutch Statuten page has been finalised.

Sysop access for User:M0tty[edit]

M0tty asks for a sysop access, to help to localize system messages. He's aware of the {{LangSwitch}} template.

IRC Summary - Week 23[edit]

  • Romaine succeed its communication goal: we've a working IRC channel, mailing list and OTRS queue ;
  • Romaine, SPQRobin and Dereckson commit themselves to deliver bylaws. SPQRobin and Dereckson will meet irl this Thrusday to kickstart the drafting process ; Romaine will join on IRC evening.
  • We'll all participate to Wiki Loves Monument 2012.
  • A meeting is planned at Brussels Sunday July 1st. Ziko from WMNL will join. We need a place (HSBXL?) and an hour (1pm?).
  • Wiki policy: We would prefer to use only one wiki for members (Wikimedia namespace?) and the public (Main namespace?).

  • Create a bug tracker or use an existing one (redmine?) ;
  • See if some kind of Scrum is possible ; if so, if SPQRobin is willing to manage the process being a scrummaster ;

  • Note somewhere the The Hub idea ;
  • Note somewhere the CentralNotice idea ;
  • Prepare the brochure plan.

  • Install somewhere the Translate extension if Wednesday we don't have it.
  • Note somewhere he'll have to ask .be domains transfer when the chapter will be reality / see with Romaine if further discussion with NL chapter is needed or if all is already okay on their side.

  • to be able to delete accidental creation pages ;
  • to import templates from Commons or meta ;
  • to manage centralnotice to see if we've to add important events date (will wait a consensus about what we put in CentralNotice, important events like the July 1st meeting?).

User:Dereckson as bureaucrat[edit]

I hereby ask to be added to the bureaucrat technical group:

  • to help to process access requests (technically, it means add sysop access, add or remove bot access, add translateadmin access / in practice, I think the good procedure to follow is to have a quick discussion here to get a local consensus, then process the requests following this consensus);
  • because it's better if we're several users to be able to do that, so we don't to create a bottleneck in case of vacancies/inactivities/etc. ;
  • to be able to process rename requests (but on a local 'secondary' wiki and with the SUL, this is a now a very minor issue and I don't think we'll have 3 of them in the following years ; I suspect we'll get a new user, through outreach actions, creating a Firstname Lastname account, then asking a rename to Nickname after some edits on another project like WP).

Request for Translation administrator[edit]

I'd like to have the translation administrator permission, because I want to help to manage translations and I'm translating pages on this wiki into German. Is it acceptable to assign me to this user group? Greetings, Vogone (talk) 23:48, 30 August 2012 (UTC)

@Vogone: some background: On IRC we had some while ago a discussion about the usage of this extension. SPQRobin liked the extension, Dereckson and I disliked the extension. To me and Dereckson the extension isn't practical and not workable. I already noticed that that system doesn't help me translate pages, it only annoys me and doesn't show easily what needs translations. Instead we use standard the Template:LangSwitch. Then all translated texts are close to each other on just one page. I also noticed that the extension is messing up the recent changes by default by not showing everything, also very very annoying. @Romaine: If we would shut down that extension, it wouldn't make sense to give me the rights. It isn't a problem for me to use LangSwitch. Location for the WCA[edit]

in the last months, some of the Wikimedia Chapters (in this moment, more than half of them, and in the long term we hope that all of them will join) have been working on the creation of the Wikimedia Chapters Association. We have been talking for a long time about the possible country of registration, and we are currently voting a resolution about the place (voting will close on 25 November). We have three candidate locations, and one of them is Belgium (the others are Netherlands and Geneva, Switzerland). Of course nobody knows which will be the final choice; anyway, I think this is of interest to you (and probably I should have written here before, sorry!). - Laurentius (talk) 11:05, 15 November 2012 (UTC)

Prize giving ceremony Wiki Loves Monuments in Belgium and Luxembourg[edit]

The prize giving ceremony for Wiki Loves Monuments 2012 in Belgium and Luxembourg will be held on 30 November 2012 at the office of KIK / IRPA in Brussels. For more information read at: Meetings.

There are thoughts to organize a meeting on that day in the afternoon to talk about the founding of Wikimedia Belgium. More should follow later.

A quick note about “en. guidelines are not a religion”.[edit]

A small bug in the new central authentication showed me a MediaWiki interface where I were logged in, but with contributions in IP. This contribution were under my IPv6 (IPv4 or IPv6 is chosen to connect to a website by Firefox according speed test if I've well understood some documentation), mistaken for a weird username. This were very instructive.

I kindly ask to have a better attitude than this attitude dealing with newcomers for two reasons:

  1. Outreach issue — If I would have been an human being slightly interested by Wikimedia Belgium, and not already someone involved in Wikimedia projects, I would have found this community clearly not engaging;
  2. en.wikipedia is not our religion — To refer to en en.wikipedia guideline to explain a situation isn't a go. Wikimedia projects are diversified, and we should use our own chapter community space guidelines (or a lot better: use instead common sense) instead to refer to the bureauratic fr. and en. policies.

P.S. I also wonder WHY a long alphanumeric nickname should be banned if someone wants that (well... not an IPv6, to avoid confusion, but something like A2736B754B2E2C7D98237383C32). I have clearly my own thoughts about what this is a bad username, but I would tend to be more diplomatic and positive to get a change, and I would certainly not ban this kind of choices. --Dereckson (talk) 16:14, 22 September 2013 (UTC)
Dereckson, I fully support your opinion. We should welcome newcomers, and guide them through the sometimes complicated world of Wikipedia / MediaWiki. I agree that we should never offend newcomers. And we should answer them in their own language. In the User talk:2A02:2788:114:116:55BF:2E25:9E0E:1A6F case User:Lotje could not retrieve your language... therefore you could forgive the .en reference... I think we should put no (few) restrictions on the username that someone chooses (as long as it is not offensive?). About the supposedly IPv6 authentication compatibility problem, this should be addressed ASAP. Who is our technical support person for Would this problem also occur on other servers? en. As I were editing a page in English (fixed a typo on my userpage), English were perfectly chosen.
I were using en. as for en.wikipedia. The English Wikipedia people tends sometimes to forget there is a lot of guidelines on a lot of project, and English Wikipedia isn't the absolute reference (we clearly see that on Wikimedia Commons). On projects like meta, chapters, Commons, we need to remember we deal with people from different projects, cultures and avoid to impose the way of our home wiki.
MediaWiki. Yes, MediaWiki is IPv6 ready. I logged out, cleared cookies and logged in again, then were no more issue.

Shouldn't we create a topic Who is Who in Wikimedia Belgium with a small description of "tasks and reponsibilities"? Let's create and use a Atomium café[edit]

Dear Belgium member of Wikipedia, I'm a bite sick about using the mailing list to communicate and share informations with all other member interested about wikimedia Belgium.

That's why I suggest to create the Atomium café page to follow the example of Le bisrto " on fr.wp De kroeg on nl.wp or café on de.wp

We are wikimedians and I think that the mailing work against our productivity, creativity and efficiency.

Let's start a Atomium café wich It will keep and store all informations and discussions in a pretty form always accessible for all newcomer like other members. And let's forgot this shitty mailing list.

Just click on the start to following the Atomium café, and make the notification by email on in ours preferences, and that's it wee don't need no more to communicate.
